Costco (COST) is currently providing me with proof of why its business model is among the strongest in retail. Despite inflation, high financing costs, and cautious consumers, net sales rose by 11.2% in the fourth quarter to $93.9 billion. Net income even jumped by nearly 15% to $3.0 billion, with EPS of $6.75 exceeding expectations. When adjusted for gasoline prices and currency fluctuations, comparable sales still increased by 6.7%. Why does Costco perform so well, especially in difficult times? For me, the answer lies in the membership model....
