From products for the construction and reliable operation of commercial nuclear power plants - to nuclear-powered submarines and aircraft carriers or even valves, pumps or control electronics, embedded computing covers a broad spectrum. Tactical communications equipment is also said to be very popular in NATO countries.
What is exciting, however, is the presence of the products in all 94 active US nuclear reactors, 80% of which are expected to have their operating life extended. This is a $7 billion opportunity. The commercial nuclear energy business is expected to grow at double-digit rates. The US plans to triple nuclear energy capacity by 2050 - and US President Joe Biden signed the Advance Act on July 9 to speed up the approval process. With the acquisitions of WSC and Ultra Energy, Curtriss-Wright appears to be cleverly positioning itself more broadly here, as it can now also offer simulators and digital twins for design optimization and training purposes prescribed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), for example, and is expanding its presence in Europe.
On August 8, the share price reacted positively to the Q2 results, with defense electronics products, production ramp-ups in naval defense and OEM sales in the commercial aerospace market being the main drivers. A record order backlog of $3.2 billion was announced. This year, the company aims to grow revenue by 6% to 8% and net profit by 11% to 14%, higher than previously expected. The share is approaching its all-time high again.
