The days of simple avatars in the metaverse are over. A recently published virtual interview illustrates the remarkable progress.

Mark Zuckerberg\'s Metaverse was initially mocked by some influencers due to its "cartoonish" graphics. Recently, however, social media posts have proliferated suggesting that this criticism may have been premature. The virtual worlds could be shaping up to be something impressive. Indeed, recently, podcaster Lex Fridman posted the "first interview in the Metaverse," where he and the Meta boss had a virtual conversation. Amazing lifelike avatars were used in the process. The interview is available on YouTube and has already generated an impressive 1.6 million views within a few days.

The headset recognizes users\' facial expressions
The days of very simple avatars are over. The two interviewees sat in different parts of the country wearing their Quest Pro headsets. With their realistic avatars, each of which displayed a 3D portrait of the upper body, they were able to converse with each other seamlessly. In the podcast, Fridman explained that it felt like he was actually in the same room as Zuckerberg. The photorealistic clones are called "codec avatars."

The virtual figures were created through an extensive scan of the user\'s face. The headset recognizes the facial expressions of the "user" and transfers them to the 3D avatar in real time. According to Mark Zuckerberg, the process is more bandwidth-efficient than transferring videos.

In the future, a quick smartphone scan of the face should suffice
It should be noted that the partners in this interview are not particularly "expressive" personalities. The avatars shown were also created through state-of-the-art, hour-long scans using hundreds of cameras, which an average consumer does not have access to. In the future, however, consumers will be able to perform a quick scan with their smartphones. During the conversation with Fridman, Zuckerberg explained that users are supposed to hold their phone in front of their face for a few minutes while speaking a few sentences. While doing so, they should also show a range of facial expressions. In the end, the aim is to achieve a similar quality to the demonstrated interview.

It is likely that avatars created with a smartphone scan will have a different quality. However, the recent interview shows significant progress away from the problematic, simple metaverse models.
