Joerg Meyer writes at 16:00: First Solar (FSLR) has bottomed out and is poised for a 75% EPS increase to $13.56 in 2024 and another 53% to $20.72 in 2025, thanks in part to the Inflation Reduction Act. The P/E ratio would be in the single digits. The share should continue to reward this. UBS is bullish and raised the target from $253 to $270 on 5/21/2024. Why?
US energy consumption is rising rapidly due to the AI era. Electricity demand in the US is expected to increase by 2.4% p.a. until 2030, with data centers accounting for 0.9% of this growth. Data centers are likely to increase their share of electricity consumption from 3% to 8% by 2030. Goldman Sachs estimates that US utilities will have to invest around $50 billion in new power generation capacity just to meet the higher demand for electricity from data centers.
First Solar is benefiting from the expansion of solar energy with its thin-film solar modules and is seen by UBS as an overlooked beneficiary of this AI-based increase in electricity demand. EPS could multiply to $36.74 by 2027. The P/E ratio would be around 5.5.
The share is becoming increasingly bullish among green energy stocks. It now makes sense to follow suit and at the same time bet on the big picture breakout. Because the share has been correcting since the beginning of 2023.
