Meta Quest 3 available Oct. 10 for $499.
The Quest 3 glasses were officially announced at Meta\'s Connect developer conference on Wednesday (September 27), after first being unveiled by the company in June. Priced at $499 (€550 in Germany), as compared to the $300 for the Quest 2, the new glasses combine virtual and augmented realities, a feature also offered by Apple\'s upcoming Vision Pro.
The Vision Pro, which was unveiled in June and is expected to cost $3,499, will be launched early next year. On Tuesday, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of TF International Securities expressed that he expects Vision Pro shipments of between 400,000 and 600,000 units in 2024, far below some market participants\' expectations of 1 million units, according to estimates from component suppliers.
The new Meta Quest 3, which is already available for pre-order and will ship on October 10, is powered by Qualcomm\'s powerful Snapdragon X2 Gen-2 chip. It also offers a higher resolution than the previous Quest 2, the company said. Meta and CEO Mark Zuckerberg stressed that the new glasses feature a slimmer design and improved lenses compared to the previous model. The company also unveiled new controllers that can be used in conjunction with the glasses. There are about 500 games and apps available for the Quest 3, including products from Sony, Ubisoft and a game on Netflix\'s "Stranger Things."
Innovative AI tools and celebrities as AI personalities: Snoop Dogg and Tom Brady
Meta also unveiled new generative AI tools, including AI image editing on Instagram and new chat stickers for Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp and Messenger. In a few weeks, it will be possible to create AI-generated stickers and photo editing on Instagram with just a few words of input. Additionally, Meta unveiled impressive AI-powered personalities, including household names like rapper Snoop Dogg, football player Tom Brady and tennis player Naomi Osaka. A total of 28 such personalities will be integrated into the company\'s platforms.
The company also announced its own generative AI chatbot and is working with Microsoft to provide real-time, up-to-date web information through Microsoft\'s Bing browser. The AI assistant will be able to be integrated into conversations on messenger service WhatsApp in the future. Businesses will have the ability to customize this assistant to their unique needs in order to effectively respond to customer inquiries. However, Angela Fan, a member of Meta\'s AI team, emphasized that this project is still at an early stage of development.
The partnership with Microsoft extends to other areas, as Meta announced that Xbox Cloud Games will be coming to Quest 3 in December, while Microsoft 365 will be available later this year. Mark Zuckerberg announced at the Meta Connect annual conference, "We\'re making tools available to millions of people for business users." Thanks to the partnership with Microsoft, it is expected by the end of the year that familiar Office applications such as Word, Excel and PowerPoint will be able to be used with Meta\'s virtual reality glasses. For the first time, it will be possible to work on a virtual monitor, as writing is now clearly visible.
Meta presents the next generation of its Ray-Ban smartglasses
In another announcement, Meta presented the next generation of its Ray-Ban smartglasses. This model, which looks like a traditional pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses on the outside, will not only be able to play music, but also take calls and offer livestreaming options. The new smartglasses will cost $299 (€329 in Germany) and will be available online and in stores in 15 countries, including the U.S., Australia and Germany, starting Oct. 17. The previous model, released in 2019, was not available in Germany.
Investor reaction and expert opinion
Despite these exciting announcements, investors were unimpressed. Meta shares remained largely unchanged throughout the day. However, analyst Brent Thill of investment bank Jefferies highlighted that Meta is in a unique position to make artificial intelligence accessible to a large part of the world\'s population, thanks to its huge user base of around 3.8 billion people.
