In the field of surgical robots, Intuitive Surgical and the much smaller Procept BioRobotics (PRCT) are among the exciting companies. With its AQUABEAM robotic system, the group enables aquablation therapy, in which tissue from the prostate is removed using water pressure. The system from Procept BioRobotics is used in the treatment of prostate hyperplasia, a benign enlargement of the prostate that makes urination difficult. This new, gentle method is beginning to gain acceptance, as it could also be used to remove cancerous tissue.
Procept BioRobotics announced on Wednesday that it has received FDA approval for the HYDROS robotic system. It is a next-generation system that is an AI-based platform for aquablation therapy. It integrates AI treatment planning, advanced ball guidance and robotic resection (removal of tissue fragments). The AI capability called "FirstAssist AI" is at the heart of the system, as it uses advanced image recognition software to accurately recognize critical anatomy around ultrasound and suggest an optimal treatment plan for each patient. Thanks to robotic resection, the robot executes the treatment plan determined by the surgeon using a heat-free water jet. HYDROS is designed to increase efficiency and deliver a more accurate treatment plan for better clinical outcomes. Procept BioRobotics calls this a pivotal point, as there are already 400 robotic systems installed in the US for aquablation therapy. Consequently, HYDROS is expected to make an important contribution to the next growth phase, as the system improves surgical planning thanks to AI. HYDROS will already be launched in the USA in the current quarter.
Procept BioRobotics confirmed its sales forecast for 2024 of $217 million. However, estimates are likely to increase in the coming years, as aquablation therapy is expected to become more established in urology and is also an option in oncology for the removal of tumors and tissue.
