Western Digital (NASDAQ: WDC) is a market leader in the provision and development of digital storage media. In addition to supplying the industry with technical storage solutions, the company also offers a wide range of products for private users. Western Digital hard disks are used as internal storage media in desktop and notebook computers or as external storage. In addition to these computer-oriented products, the company also develops high-memory television and recording devices.

AI Data Framework to increase efficiency for customers

Western Digital recently introduced a six-step AI Data Cycle Storage Framework to help customers strategize and develop advanced storage infrastructures. This is designed to increase efficiency and help customers fully utilize their AI investments. The company is focused on aligning its portfolio of enterprise-class SSDs (Solid State Drives) and HDDs (Hard Disk Drives) to support the storage needs for each stage of the AI data cycle. As part of this, the company has launched new products including a high-performance PCIe Gen5 SSD, a 64TB SSD for fast AI data pools and an UltraSMR 32TB HDD.

Western Digital noted that AI models operate in a continuous loop of data consumption and generation. These models process data such as text, images, audio and video while generating another set of "unique insights." As AI technologies advance, data storage systems must have the capacity and performance to support the computational loads and speeds required for huge models to process enormous amounts of data.

Flash and HDD solutions will be used to meet storage needs

WDC aims to capitalize on this AI opportunity with its flash and HDD solutions designed to meet storage needs at different stages of the AI data cycle. Ultrastar DC SN861 SSD is the company\'s first enterprise-class PCIe Gen 5.0 solution. The new SSD (with capacities of up to 16TB) can deliver up to three times higher random read performance compared to the previous generation. It also has ultra-low latency and high responsiveness for large-scale language model training, inference and AI service delivery, the company added.

The Ultrastar DC SN655 enterprise-class SSD series, designed for storage-intensive applications, will complement the Ultrastar DC SN861 SSD. The latest U.3 SSD options can reach capacities of - 64TB. This will provide improved performance and capacity for AI data processing and larger data lakes. Variants of the new DC SN655 are currently being tested and volume shipments are expected to begin in the 2nd half of the year. WDC\'s 32TB enterprise-class ePMR drive is specifically designed for big data storage in hyperscale cloud and enterprise data centers. It is currently being tested by selected customers.

Western Digital\'s operating performance is benefiting from improved revenue trends in the HDD and flash business. An increase in ASP pricing and rising demand for nearline HDD offerings, particularly SMR drives, bodes well. The company noted that SMR-based drives accounted for 50% of nearline exabyte shipments in the last reporting quarter.

Conclusion: For the current quarter, the HDD segment is expected to benefit from the continued momentum of its SMR product portfolio. Management expects increasing demand for generative AI-driven solutions in its end markets to drive demand for HDD and flash offerings. The P/S ratio is 2 and is expected to fall to 1.5 over the next two years. The share has been in an intact upward trend since the end of October 2023.
